Introducing Our Time-Lapse Video: The Making of the University of Coimbra’s Virtual Control Room
Welcome to our latest time-lapse video showcasing the creation of a Virtual Control Room (VCR) at the University of Coimbra’s Chemical Engineering Department, expertly created and commissioned by TSC Simulation.
The Vision
The University of Coimbra, Portugal, one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious institutions, envisioned an innovative facility that would enhance students’ understanding of real-world operations and control systems. This vision was brought to life by TSC, creating a custom-built environment tailored to the university’s unique requirements.
Key Features
The VCR at the University of Coimbra is designed to mimic the layout and functionality of an actual control room, providing an authentic and immersive training experience. Here are some of the key features included in this facility:
- Voice Over IP (VOIP) Phone System: Enables seamless communication within the control room and with external contacts.
- Radios: Facilitate effective communication for field operations and emergency situations.
- Wall-Based Alarm Panels: Displayed on small monitors, allowing real-time monitoring and alterations.
- Speaker System: Plays realistic plant sound effects to simulate an operational environment.
- Networked PCs: Includes 2 trainer and 4 trainee PCs networked on a local LAN, installed with a range of dynamic process training simulations.
- Custom Desks: Designed to replicate the feel of a real control room, enhancing the training experience.
- Virtual 3D Environment: Located in a separate room, this setup allows a field operator to connect to the control room via a dedicated PC, offering comprehensive training that includes virtual reality field operations.
Educational Impact
The Virtual Control Room is set to enhance the way students learn and interact with engineering concepts. By covering a wide range of topics—from advanced control methods to shell and tube heat exchangers—students gain practical experience in a controlled, risk-free environment. The immersive and custom-built nature of the facility ensures that the training sessions are both authentic and effective.
Multi-Disciplinary Use
While located in the Chemical Engineering building, the VCR is intended for use across multiple engineering disciplines, broadening its impact and providing diverse learning opportunities for students.
Watch the Transformation
Our time-lapse video captures the entire journey of this transformation. From the initial setup to the final installation, witness how a section of the university’s Chemical Engineering department was meticulously converted into a hub of innovation and efficiency. This video not only highlights the technical aspects of the installation but also celebrates the collaborative effort and dedication that went into making this project a reality.
